Marlin Mayhem in Madeira (Jonathan Fletcher)

For my birthday yesterday I chartered M.Y. Balancal (owned and operated by Casa Velha do Palheiro). What a day we had.


With Captain Anibal Fernandes and Captain James Roberts as crew and myself as the angler, we successfully raised and caught, and released, an estimated 2,550 pounds of Blue Marlin in 3 fish. All three fish were caught around Ribeira Brava. 

At 12h15 we successfully caught and after 19 minutes released an estimated 850 lb blue marlin. 
At 13h00 we successfully caught and after 23 minutes released an estimated 750 lb blue marlin. 
At 16h00 we successfully caught and after 30 minutes released an estimated 950 lb blue marlin. 

And the conclusion? Madeira fishery seems stroing again and that M.Y. Balancal still has some days left this summer for hire! Also I had just been sent the scary story from Bermuda about the crew member being speared, so on the third fish which was very green, I was to put it mildly a little apprehensive!
